Forestry and Garden Workers perform a variety of routine tasks in propagating and cultivating plants, planting and maintaining gardens, assisting with the management of forests, including both conservation and production operations, managing pests and weeds, and assisting with installing, servicing and maintaining irrigation systems.

Indicative Skill Level:

Most occupations in this minor group have a level of skill commensurate with the qualifications and experience outlined below.

In Australia:

  • AQF Certificate II or III, or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4); or
  • AQF Certificate I, or compulsory secondary education (ANZSCO Skill Level 5)

In New Zealand:

  • NZQF Level 2 or 3 qualification, or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4); or
  • NZQF Level 1 qualification, or compulsory secondary education (ANZSCO Skill Level 5)

In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. In the case of some Skill Level 5 occupations, a short period of on-the-job training may be required in addition to or instead of the formal qualification, or no formal qualification or on-the-job training may be required.

Tasks Include:

  • collecting seeds, and cultivating, planting and propagating trees, seeds, seedlings and bulbs
  • monitoring trees and plants for healthy growth and potential weed, insect, disease, and fertiliser problems
  • killing weeds, felling and de-barking non-productive trees and thinning young forestry plantations
  • cultivating and maintaining natural and plantation forests and felling trees
  • loading, unloading and moving garden and nursery supplies and equipment
  • assisting with planting potting-up and transplanting flowers, shrubs, and trees
  • maintaining gardens by watering, weeding, pruning, mulching and fertilising, and operating and adjusting irrigation systems
  • managing and controlling pests and weeds species by applying chemicals and trapping and shooting animals
