New NAFTA Rules for Business Travelers Agreed by U.S, Canada and Mexico

Friday, 21 February 2014

A meeting of leaders from Canada, the U.S. and Mexico was taken place at Toluca city, Mexico on Wednesday, February 19, 2014. In the meeting, all the three countries have agreed on creating a continent-wide "trusted traveler" program, allowing vetted individuals to cross borders quickly.

The 'trusted - traveler' program is considered as part of an attempt to strengthen commercial and cultural exchanges between the three countries to mark the 20th anniversary of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

According to the countries' representatives, the program would speed up the cross-border movement of business travelers to and from NAFTA member states. This movement might be facilitated by establishing a North American system for pre-screening business travelers.

In addition to the "trusted traveler" program, the three countries' leaders including the U.S. President Obama, President Enrique Pena Nieto of Mexico and Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada also agreed on measures to harmonize customs data, improve infrastructure and increase co-operation with Central America, a transit point for drugs moving north out of South America and a region rife with violence. More educational exchanges were also proposed in the meeting.

On the statement in the meeting, the U.S. President Obama released that he wanted 100,000 Mexican students studying in the U.S every year, up from less than 15,000 now, and more American students going to other parts of the Western Hemisphere.
