The U.S. is looking at a record-setting year, according to an announcement from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Acting Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank indicated that international visitors' spending in the U.S reached $14 billion in May, an increased of 8 percent compared to the same time last year. It marked continual tourism growth for 29 months. "This also means that we are on pace for a record-setting year with international visitors having spent over $68 billion so far, up 12 percent compared to last year" added Ms. Blank. The U.S. also saw an increase in the number of actual visitors to the country from Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. Meanwhile U.S. citizens spent nearly $50 billion on travel and tourism abroad during the first five months of the 2012. Ms. Blank expected the U.S. travel and tourism industry to help increase economic growth and U.S. job creation. The release of the National Travel and Tourism Strategy is a blueprint for the federal government to get 100 million international visitors each year by the end of 2021.With this strategy, international visitors are estimated to spend about $250 billion per year and help to create more jobs for economic growth in communities across the country.
