12,000 U.S. Visas for Ghanaians Broke Record in 2011Tuesday, July 03, 2012
U.S. visas issued to Ghanaians travelling to the U.S. broke a record in 2011, according to the U.S. embassy in Ghana. There were over 12,000 Ghanaians approved for U.S. visas to travel to the U.S. in 2011. The U.S. disclosed that these visas were either for business purposes or education in the U.S. U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Donald Teitelbaum revealed that the number was unprecedented in the history of the two countries. In terms of relationship between the two countries, the U.S. is ranked as Ghana's second largest group of visitors and the U.S. is Ghana's most popular foreign destination. "We issued over 12,000 visas in 2011, more than ever before, and we are good business partners," added Ambassador Teitelbaum. The trade between the two countries has increased by 220 percent over the past five years from $650 million in 2007 to $1.97 billion in 2011. Many U.S. companies like General Electric, Hewlett Packard and Trimble are opening new offices and even regional headquarters in Ghana. In addition, the cooperation in education between the two countries was making progress.."I see thousands of Ghanaian students studying in the United States, and thousands of Americans studying in Ghana" said Mr. Teitelbaum.
