US Embassy Relaxes Visa Renewal ProcedureWednesday, 4 February 2009
The US Embassy in Ghana has made the renewal procedure of certain US visas much easier for eligible applicants. It is hopeful that these procedures will be followed in other US embassies and consulates located in other countries. According to the US Embassy in Ghana, the new visa renewal procedure, which was implemented on January 5, 2009, will make the procedure for renewing a Visitor Visa or a Specialty Occupation (H-1B) Visa easier. Mainly, eligible applicants will not need to make an appointment for an interview to renew their visa, making the procedure faster, less time consuming and easier for all parties. To be eligible to participate in the new visa renewal procedure, applicants must have been issued a full-validity visa; for Visitor Visas, the visa must have been issued for ten (10) years, and, for Specialty Occupation Visas, the visa must have been issued for three (3) years. In addition, the applicant must be in physical possession of the passport that contains the full-validity visa. Finally, the visa must be unexpired or has expired within the last twelve (12) months. If the applicant meets all of these conditions, the applicant may go to the US Embassy in Ghana without an appointment from Monday through Thursday at 1:30pm to apply for a new visa. The first twenty-five (25) applicants daily will be admitted. Applicants must bring their passport with the visa, completed application forms, all supporting documents and all applicable fees. For applicants seeking to renew the Specialty Occupation (H-1B) Visa, the approval notice from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) must be brought with them to the US Embassy as well.
