The Australian government has announced that it will take several measures to increase its airport security, in response to growing evidence of widespread criminal activity at Australia’s entry points. The enhanced security is predicted to raise the price of airfares to and from Australia. As a result of much speculation about the criminal activity of Australian airport staff, Melbourne airport has announced that it will conduct a major and independent security probe. This will include background checks of all airport staff working in secure areas, random searches of staff vehicles and possessions when they enter and leave the airport and new federal government-appointed security controllers at airports. Sir John Wheeler, the new head of security, has outlined his aim to "check employees to ensure that they are free of criminal activity, both convictions or active criminal activity, and of course that the procedures that will be in place will be as good as you can reasonably expect in a free and open society". It is understood that the government requires all major airports to increase security by intensifying inspections of persons and goods entering and leaving the airport. Senior Australian Federal Police officers will now be stationed at each major airport in an effort to increase monitoring of any terrorist or criminal activity. These new measures are predicted to cause an increase in the cost of airplane tickets. Transport Minister John Anderson has assured the public the increase in cost will be minimal, saying "I don't think people will argue with paying another buck for a ticket for significant increases in security". |
