Changes to the Puerto Rican Birth Certificate to Affect US Citizenship Seekers

Tuesday, 20 July 2010

The Vital Statistics Office of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico has implemented changes to the Birth Certificates.

Starting on July 1, 2010, the new Puerto Rican Birth Certificates (PRBC) will be provided with new security features. These changes will also affect individuals seeking to obtain US Citizenship.

The USCIS will continue to accept certified PRBCs issued before July 1st until September 30, 2010 from Puerto Rican individuals applying for a familial relationship or US nationality. After September 30th , however, the USCIS will notify and give the applicant the opportunity to resubmit a new PRBC.

Puerto Rican nationals wishing to apply for a new PRBC may do so online or mail. Mailed applications, however, will no longer be accepted after July 1,2010.
