Migrants Make USA a Safer PlaceThursday, 7 August 2008 Statistics in USA indicate that the most safe and liveable cities in the US have much higher migrant populations than others. The "Safest City" awards, published by Congressional Quarterly recently, revealed that among the top 10 cities with populations over 500,000, 4 were in Texas. Forth Worth, San Antonio, Austin and El Paso were all in the top 10 with El Paso as the second safest city in the United States. The common factor for these 4 cities is that they are all close to the Mexican border and have relatively high numbers of migrants (both legal and illegal). New York came in 4th, and has made great progress in improving safety for its citizens with crime rates at the lowest ever recorded. Today, approximately 38% of New York City's population was born outside of the United States. Robert J. Sampson, chairman of the Sociology Department of Harvard University, commented "I would say, if you want to be safe, move to an immigrant city". According to Sampson, there's "a growing consensus" that "immigration revitalizes cities around the country." Instead of becoming empty urban wastelands, marginal neighbourhoods fill up with new immigrants who want to build their futures and wind up building the economy. Public opinion of immigrants in USA has improved significantly over the last few years, and with the strain on the US economy, businesses and the American people are realising the significant contribution that immigrants make to the community and the economy.
