TRAINEE (J-1) VISA
Persons who seek to enter the United States in order to train in his or her specialty or non-specialty occupation are eligible for the J-1 Trainee Visa. The applicant can live and train temporarily in the United States to gain valuable skills in his or her major area of interest in order to enhance his or her skills and knowledge.
The applicant can train in a variety of areas, including arts and culture, information media and communications, education, social sciences, management, business, commerce and finance, health-related occupations, aviation, engineering, architecture, mathematics, industrial occupations and public administration.

TRAINEE VISA (J-1) BASIC REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for the Trainee (J) Visa, the applicant must have a post-secondary degree from a foreign academic institution plus one year of related work experience or the applicant must have five years working experience in his or her occupational field. The purpose of the training must be to enhance the applicant’s skills in his or her particular area of interest and to improve the applicant’s techniques. Before applying for the visa abroad, the applicant must find and meet the requirements of a sponsoring organization.
TRAINEE VISA (J-1) ENTITLEMENTS
The applicant is entitled to remain in the United States for no more than 2 years. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 years of age may accompany the applicant to the United States with the relevant visas. The spouse and children of the applicant can attend public and private schools without obtaining a Study Visa. Spouses and children can obtain employment authorization following their arrival, and employment is authorized for the length of the applicant’s stay or 4 years, whichever is shorter.
