SHORT-TERM SCHOLAR EXCHANGE (J-1) VISA
A Short-term Scholar exchange program allows foreign professors and research scholars to lecture, observe, consult or train at research institutions, museums, libraries, colleges and universities in the United States for up to six (6) months. A professor must have obtained a PhD or the highest degree possible in an area of expertise. A research scholar is a person who engages in research in a specific area and has made significant contributions to the specific area.

SHORT-TERM SCHOLAR EXCHANGE VISA (J-1) BASIC REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for an Exchange visa under the Short-term Scholar exchange program, the applicant must be either a foreign professor or foreign research scholar in the applicant’s home country who is coming to the US to lecture, observe, consult or train at one of several eligible institutions. Before applying for the visa, the applicant must find a sponsoring organization, and the applicant must meet the requirements of the sponsoring organization selected. Finally, applicants may also be required to meet certain health and character requirements.
SHORT-TERM SCHOLAR EXCHANGE VISA (J-1) ENTITLEMENTS
An Exchange visa holder participating in a Short-term Scholar exchange program is entitled to remain in the United States for up to six (6) months to engage in lecturing, observing, consulting or training at research institutions, museums, libraries, colleges and universities.
An Exchange visa holder's spouse and unmarried children under 21 years of age may accompany them to the US upon approval of their derivative (J-2) visas. A dependent (spouse or child) may accept employment upon approval of a work authorization application for the duration of their stay in the US. Any dependent, school aged children may attend primary or secondary school in the US for the duration of their stay.
