SECONDARY STUDENT (J-1) VISA

The Secondary Student Visa allows foreign secondary students to attend accredited secondary schools in the United States for one year of academic study. During their stay, foreign secondary students stay with an American family or at an accredited boarding school.

While attending school, students may take part in school sanctioned extracurricular activities, including athletics. Students may not accept full-time or part-time employment but may accept occasional employment, such as babysitting or yard work.

SECONDARY STUDENT VISA (J-1) BASIC REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for the Secondary Student Visa, foreign secondary school students must be between 15 and 18 1/2 years of age or have not completed more than 11 years of primary and secondary education (excluding kindergarten). Students who have previously participated in this program are not eligible.

Before applying for a J-1 visa abroad, applicants must first apply and be accepted to a secondary school in the United States as well as to a sponsoring organization, which may be one and the same. Students must also show proof of sufficient funds to cover expenses while in the US. In addition, students must maintain their residence abroad and show proof of binding ties to ensure return to their home country. Applicants may also be required to meet certain health and character requirements.


SECONDARY STUDENT VISA (J-1) ENTITLEMENTS

Secondary students must reside with an American host family or at an accredited US boarding school. They may enter the US to complete one year of academic study at an accredited public or private secondary school. Finally, they may not engage in any employment, with the exceptions of babysitting, yard work and similar activities.
