RESEARCH SCHOLAR EXCHANGE (J-1) VISA
A Research Scholar exchange program allows foreign research scholars to temporarily come to the United States to engage in teaching, lecturing and researching with their American colleagues. Research scholars may not be a candidate for tenure track, and the applicant may not be in the United States in J-1 status for 12 months prior to the start of the program unless the applicant is present in the United States for less than 6 months or the applicant is currently in the United States, participating as a Short-term Scholar.

RESEARCH SCHOLAR EXCHANGE VISA (J-1) BASIC REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for an Exchange visa under the Research Scholar program, the applicant must be a research scholar in a foreign country and be engaged in research in a specific area as well as have made significant contributions to such area of expertise. Before applying for the visa, the applicant must find a sponsoring organization and meet the requirements of the sponsoring organization. Finally, applicants may be required to meet certain health and character requirements.
RESEARCH SCHOLAR EXCHANGE VISA (J-1) ENTITLEMENTS
An Exchange visa holder participating in a Research Scholar exchange program is entitled to remain in the United States for a maximum of 3 years. However, the applicant may receive an extension for up to 6 months in order to complete a specific project or research activity.
An Exchange visa holder's spouse and unmarried children under 21 years of age may accompany them to the US upon approval of their derivative (J-2) visas. A dependent (spouse or child) may accept employment upon approval of a work authorization application for the duration of their stay in the US. Any dependent, school aged children may attend primary or secondary school in the US for the duration of their stay.
