Persons are eligible for the Physician Visa if they seek to enter the United States to pursue graduate medical education or training at an accredited school of medicine or scientific institution.
The applicant can be sponsored either by an organization or by an academic institution and must meet all academic and training requirements in order to attend graduate medical school in the United States. The applicant can temporarily live and study in the United States with their spouse and minor children.

PHYSICIAN VISA (J-1) BASIC REQUIREMENTS
The applicant must be sponsored by either the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates or by a United States university or academic medical center. The applicant must have passed the required medical academic examinations and have adequate prior education and training to pursue the required education and training in the United States.
PHYSICIAN VISA (J-1) ENTITLEMENTS
The applicant is entitled to remain in the United States for the duration of his or her participation in the program of graduate medical education or training for a maximum duration of 7 years. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 years of age can live in the United States with the relevant visas. Spouses and children may attend public and private schools, and spouses and children can obtain work authorization upon their arrival, and employment is authorized for the length of the applicant’s stay or 4 years, whichever is shorter.
