US Government could learn from Canada's Immigration Program

Monday, 23 June 2008

Economic analysts suggest that the US government should learn from Canada's highly successful Immigration program to help improve local & national economies.

Though USA is currently experiencing economic troubles, there is still a shortage in skilled workers in the country. Analysts are suggesting that highly successful immigration campaigns in Canadian cities such as Morden, Manitoba, could be just as effective for US cities.

Like many US states, Manitoba boasts a low unemployment rate, and a low fertility rate, which has resulted in labour shortages. The difference is that Manitoba initiated an immigration policy that now sees approximately 10,000 new skilled & semi-skilled arrivals annually.

A research paper on Manitoba's immigration strategy was developed in 2006. According to the report, there are a number of factors or "cornerstones" that make the Manitoba immigration policy so effective.

These include:

  • The community's support of the immigration program
  • Effective screening of immigration applicants

Currently the US has large numbers of illegal immigrants entering the country, with approximately 800,000 to 900,000 entering each year. Of them, approximately 400,000 leave voluntarily or are deported, which still leaves a growth of approximately 500,000 migrants a year.

The majority of illegal immigrants are in un-skilled positions, and due to the volume of illegal immigrants entering the country, these jobs are getting more competitive, further reducing wages for un-skilled roles.

While illegal immigration is causing issues for the US immigration department, all levels of government agree that more skilled migrants are essential if USA is to continue to be a major economic power.
