UK IMMIGRATION NEWS
Strict new rules for business visitors to the UKFriday, 31 October 2008 The UK Government has recently published tough new rules to tighten the visitor route into the UK. Under strict new rules effective from November 2008, visa nationals who wish to visit the UK for business for up to six months must apply for a dedicated new business visa (entry clearance) and prove that they will be carrying out specified activities including the following:
Non-visa nationals will not be required to obtain prior entry clearance for a business visit of up to six months. The UK Border and Immigration Minister Phil Woolas said: "Now we are introducing an Australian-style points system for selective migration. It makes sense to tighten visitor visas at the same time. These changes will help create a fairer Britain with fair treatment for those who play by the rules, but tough action against those who break the law. We want the UK to stay open and attractive to both business and visitors. At the same time we are determined to deliver a system of border security which is among the most secure in the world." The new rules make the distinction between business visitors and those engaging in longer-term business activities clear. Further new provision will be made for visiting professors accompanying students on study abroad programmes and visiting religious workers undertaking some preaching or pastoral work in the course of a business visit (for instance whilst attending a conference). The Home Office has also outlined further details on two new visitor routes for sportspeople and entertainers, recognising the contribution made by these individuals to British culture. These new routes retain an historical concession which permitted sportspeople and entertainers to come here to participate in certain events for a short time without a work permit.
