Proposed Changes to New Zealand Immigration PoliciesTuesday, 18 November 2008 The National Party won New Zealand's general election on November 8, ending Labour's nine year reign, and have outlined their plans for reforming New Zealand's Immigration Policy In the lead up to the election, National announced the focus of their immigration policy. They intend to introduce new visas, streamline some existing visas and strengthen others including the Work to Residence programme. National's primary immigration objectives are:
The largest change will see the introduction of a 'Silver Fern Visa' for those with a recognised qualification, either obtained in New Zealand or obtained in a country with which New Zealand has a visa-free agreement. The Silver Fern Visa will enable applicants with a recognised qualification to come to New Zealand temporary while they seek permanent employment in highly-skilled areas. Applicants will be entitled to complete temporary work to support themselves. Once a permanent job is found, they will be granted a 24 month work permit and can use this experience to increase their points score if they apply for residence under the Skilled Migrant Category. In addition, National's policy also promises changes to the Business/Investor Visas; a streamlining of the Employer Accreditation Policies to allow employers to recruit overseas; and the introduction of a Retirement Visa for individuals who are willing to pay their own health, welfare and superannuation costs.
