Proposed New Visas for New ZealandFriday, 5 September 2008 The New Zealand National Party have released their proposed immigration policy which includes new retirement visas, work visas and reduced paper work for expats wishing to return to New Zealand. The National party of New Zealand has proposed a number of immigration changes should they be successful in the upcoming elections, including:
The proposed retirement visa will be granted only if the "high net worth" people agree to indemnify New Zealand against any health, welfare and superannuation costs. This means that people migrating under this visa will need to possess the funds to cover all expenses, as they will not be eligible for government subsidised services. According to immigration spokesman Dr Lockwood Smith, it is a "win-win" situation as the retiree can enjoy the lifestyle benefits of New Zealand, and it will come at no cost to tax payers. Current immigration minister Clayton Cosgrove, said that Dr Smith had himself rejected the same idea in 1999 as it would complicate the healthcare system and cause problems for hospitals trying to recoup money owed to them. The National party also proposed their "Silver Fern" visa, which allows people with tertiary qualifications recognised in New Zealand to look for work in New Zealand. Those who could gain a permanent job and exceed certain salary thresholds would be granted a 24 month visa and put on a fast track to residency. Dr Smith also stated that changes were needed for investor visas, and indicated that the National party would lower the English language requirements for investors, as well as how much investment money must be used. Immigration is a hot topic for the major parties in New Zealand leading up to elections, and immigration policy may be a deciding factor in how many individuals cast their votes.
