WORKING IN NEW ZEALAND
The New Zealand economy has experienced significant growth over the past years, along with very low unemployment. This has created huge demand for highly skilled workers from within New Zealand and all over the world.
Despite low unemployment, the New Zealand labour market is still very competitive as employers seek to recruit the best people to fill vacancies. Therefore, it may take some time to find a suitable job. The demand for certain skills will depend on the prevailing economic conditions and other circumstances specific to particular industries or parts of the country.
Many newcomers are surprised by the general flexibility of the work environment as New Zealanders place general importance on work-life balance. As such, employees may be able to negotiate non-standard hours or other flexible options with their employer.
The average salary in New Zealand is approximately $45,000 before tax. Salaries vary between profession, industry, work experience etc. All workers in New Zealand have to pay tax on their income.
All full-time employees are entitled to a minimum of four (4) weeks paid leave for every year of employment and there are eleven (11) public holidays every year for which all employees must be paid. Parental leave is available for both parents. Working hours are not legislated, but are usually around 40 hours per week, these should be included in your employment contract. Most companies work from 8.30am to 5pm, with a half hour or an hour break for lunch.
Many professions in New Zealand are regulated by national bodies. Professional certification and regulation helps to ensure that workers are suitably qualified, and comply with New Zealand standards.
