Children adopted overseas are included as a special category of visitor under visitor’s visa policy. This visitor’s visa allows children adopted overseas to stay in New Zealand for up to 12 months while their citizenship is being processed.

NEW ZEALAND ADOPTED CHILDREN VISITOR VISA BASIC REQUIREMENTS

To obtain a visitor visa under this special visitor category, applicants must meet the basic good health and character criteria and be the adoptive child of a New Zealand citizen. Applicants also need to obtain confirmation from the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs, that there are no barriers to a grant of citizenship.

NEW ZEALAND ADOPTED CHILDREN VISITOR VISA ENTITLEMENTS

Approved applicants will be issued with a visitor’s visa authorising a stay of up to 6 months, whilst waiting for their New Zealand citizenship to be processed. Children holding this category of visitor’s visa may be able to access some social services on the basis on their parent’s citizenship.

Adopted children who are school-aged are classed as domestic students for fee purposes, but should hold a student visa if they wish to enrol into a New Zealand primary or secondary school.
