STUDENT VISA TO NEW ZEALAND
DOMESTIC STUDENT VISA TO NEW ZEALAND
Some groups of foreign students may be treated as domestic students for fee and enrolment purposes. However, they still require a student permit to study at a New Zealand educational facility or institute. These students may include dependent children of: work permit holders; New Zealand citizens, doctorate (PhD) students; consulate officials; and children who have entered New Zealand to be adopted.
NEW ZEALAND DOMESTIC STUDENT VISA BASIC REQUIREMENTS
To get a 'domestic' student visa, applicants must meet basic health and good character requirements, and must be either:
- A dependent child of a person on a student exchange programme; or
- A child of a New Zealand citizen or resident and awaiting the processing of their residence or citizenship application; or
- A dependent child of valid work permit holders; or
- A dependent child of a Commonwealth Scholarship holders; or
- A person or a dependent child of a person who is a recognised refugee claimant; or
- A dependent child of a foreign student enrolled in a PhD programme at a New Zealand university; or
- A diplomat or consulate official; or
- A child who has entered New Zealand to be adopted, whose adoption is supported by the Department of Child, Youth and Family; or
- A child who is in the custody of the Ministry of Social Development; or
- A student enrolled in a PhD programme (after 19 April 2005) in any New Zealand university.
These individuals are considered to be domestic students for the purpose of attending an educational institution in New Zealand, and are exempt from paying foreign course fees.
NEW ZEALAND DOMESTIC STUDENT VISA ENTITLEMENTS
Holders of student visa and/or permit have the right to study for a course in a New Zealand institution for the period of time specified on the visa. Approved domestic students are generally issued with an 'open' visa and/or permit allowing them to study at any institution. The validity of the student permit will normally be consistent with the student's needs – for example, the length of the course or for the length of a parent's work permit.
