Temporary Work Permit Program to Be ReassessedFriday, 30 July 2010 Starting the fall of 2010, the Temporary Work Permit Program will be reassessed within Alberta states the province’s minister for employment and immigration, Thomas Lukaszuk. Currently the Canadian Temporary Work Permit program is a way to have foreign workers live and work within Canada on a temporary basis. Due to the availability of the Temporary Work Permit, the number of individuals who have been able to travel to Canada under this visa class has been steadily rising. In Alberta alone, there has been a prominent increase in workers under the Temporary Work Permit from 16,000 people in 2005 to 66,000 people in 2009. The Temporary Work Permit, however, is not meant to lead to long-term residency and was created to manage the high demand for workers within Canada. Currently individuals are required to leave Canada after their visa term expires which forces employers to keep on hiring new foreign workers for the same job. "Why not consider some permanency for this workforce?" stated Lukaszuk. Starting the fall of 2010, the Minister for Immigration and Employment of Alberta, Thomas Lukaszuk, will work with Calgary MLA, Woo Paw to address concerns regarding the Temporary Work Permit and using it to further meet employment demands.
