Birth Rate at a 20 Year High in CanadaThursday, 1 October 2009 Statistics Canada has released a report that states that Canada's birth rate between 2006 and 2007 has risen 3.7 percent. This is the largest increase in the annual birth rate since 1989. In 2007 women in Canada gave birth to 367,864 babies, which is 13,247 more than the previous year. This upward swing in births is not just a uniquely Canadian statistic; in the past few years other countries, the likes of Spain, Sweden the UK and Australia have seen increased fertility rates as well. A factor that has been contributing to this statistic is the fact that women 30 years and older have been having more children. This age group saw a 56 percent increase in births in 2007. In 2007 alone 115, 415 babies were welcomed by women between the ages of 30-34, further illustrating that women are waiting longer to have families. Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia accounted for 83 present for the total births in Canada in 2007, while there was no increase shown in the Yukon and very little shown in Newfoundland and Labrador. Women in Alberta had the highest birth rates in the age range of 30-34, while Ontario dominated the 35-39 age range and British Columbia for women 40-49 years.
