The Canadian Immigration minister, Jason Kenney, is lending his support to the competition seeing it as a great way for young people in Canada to learn more about how immigration has helped shape their country’s history; by discovering the stories and characters of Canada's past.

Minister Kenney stated, "this contest provides an excellent opportunity for young people to conduct research into the exciting lives of the individuals who have laid the foundations of our diverse society."

An entry can be in the form of a literary work such as a poem or an essay or a piece of visual art. The winners or each of the three age categories, which range from children to those under 18, will win a trip to Ottawa.
