Winnipeg becomes an increasingly popular destination for newcomers

Tuesday, 12 May 2009

Despite the tough times of economic uncertainties and massive job losses, Winnipeg expects its economy to grow by 1.1 per cent this year. Winnipeg is the third most economically stable city in the country with an unemployment rate as low as 4.7 per cent.

Are there enough jobs to go around? Absolutely, says Connie Tamoto of Destination Winnipeg — an economic development and tourism services agency funded by the City of Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba. "Because we have so many different sectors — from manufacturing to transportation, aerospace, life sciences and agriculture," she points out, adding there are always jobs available in one sector or the other. Tamoto also notes that the city is a model multicultural city with a huge community of more than 100 different ethnic groups, speaking as many languages.

According to a recent survey, one-third of Canadian adults say they would consider moving to Winnipeg under the right circumstances, citing job and economic opportunities as attractive qualities. Winnipeg also has one of the most affordable housing markets in Canada.

The multicultural landscape is attributed to the immigration policy of its provincial government. The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program, established under the Canada-Manitoba Immigration Agreement to meet the immigration needs of the province, seeks qualified workers and business people with a strong likelihood of becoming successfully established in Manitoba, including those who otherwise may not qualify under Canada's immigration criteria. "We're looking for people to come and build our city with us," says Tamoto.
