2009 Federal Budget puts Canadians firstWednesday, 4 February 2009 Finance minister Jim Flaherty has put to rest some of the doom and gloom forecasts originally put forth by critics and prognosticators, assuring Canadians that their needs will be at the top of his agenda during these tough economic times. The Conservative government has spent the past number of weeks working on a federal budget that would include a $40 billion dollar economic stimulus package, combining a number of programs designed to help Canada through this economic crisis. The new budget includes measure to increase job growth, consumer confidence, and other economy boosting measures over the next two years. Projections would have a surplus of $700 million dollars by the 2013/2014, which is positive news indeed for all Canadians, current and prospective. The budget also contains an increased focus on tourism and marketing for regions in Canada that rely heavily on tourism for their local economy, with some $40 million dollars allocated to that industry for Whistler, Squamish, and the Sunshine Coast. Flaherty has also tabled initiatives supporting local infrastructure concerns. Although there has been a good deal of criticism leading up to the tabling of the 2009 budget, critics are satisfied to a large extent that it has addressed many of the most important concerns, and seems to be heavily geared towards helping all Canadians.
