AUSTRALIAN SKILLED SPONSORED VISA BASIC REQUIREMENTS
In order to satisfy labour market shortages, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has set specific basic requirements for people who are interested in applying under the Skilled Migration Stream.
To qualify for skilled migration, you (or your partner) must be able to satisfy these basic Visa requirements and meet the current pass mark under the Skilled Australian Sponsored Visa type. You must meet specific age requirements, English language ability, minimum qualifications level, selection of a nominated occupation and recent work experience.
In addition to meeting the basic visa requirements, you must also satisfy the current points test and have sponsorship from an eligible relative.
Points can be claimed for several factors including skill, age, English language ability, specific work experience, spouse skills and other bonus categories. The current pass mark for this category is 100 points, and can include the 15 points which are awarded for relationship.
To sponsor under this category, your relative can live anywhere** in Australia and must be one of the following:
- an Australian citizen
- an Australian permanent resident
- an Eligible New Zealand citizen.
You or your spouse must be related to your sponsor as one of the following:
- a non-dependent child – including a natural, adoptive or step-child
- a parent – including adoptive or step-parent
- a brother or sister – including adoptive or step-siblings
- a niece or nephew – including adoptive or step-niece or nephew
- an aunt or uncle – including adoptive or step-aunt or uncle.
** If your relative lives in Sydney, Gosford, Newcastle or Wollongong, you must meet additional requirements.
AUSTRALIAN SKILLED SPONSORED VISA ENTITLEMENTS
As a permanent resident, you have the right to live, work and study in Australia for as long as you wish. When you are granted permanent residence, a Visa label is placed in your passport as proof of your permanent residency.
Other benefits of holding permanent residence include access to Medicare (government-subsidised health care) and ability to apply for citizenship once you satisfy the residency requirements.
