UN Suggests Australia Ease Visas for Developing Country TouristsWednesday, 25 July 2012 Australia should relax its visas rules for visitors from developing countries in order to boost tourism, according to the UN World Tourism Organization. UN World Tourism Organisation secretary-general Taleb Rifai says there is no evidence of the necessity to protect country security by tough entry conditions for tourists, and Australia and other developed countries should ease their regimes. "Visas are becoming a real nightmare," said Mr. Rifai "It is not reasonable to still see long lines, very cumbersome, uneasy, complicated, lengthy, overpriced entry formalities all over the world, particularly facing nationals from countries that are rising and countries that are providing the base for future incoming tourists." The UN also suggested an easier entry rule for tourists from developing countries such as India and China which now contribute to the greatest annual growth to tourism numbers. Chinese and Indian visitors are currently facing a number of bureaucratic hurdles. Easier Australian visa requirements for tourists could also make up for the high Australian dollar which decreases the country's competitiveness.
