New Streamlined Australian Visa Application Process RecommendedTuesday, February 14, 2012 Universities Australia, the peak body representing the public interest of the country's universities, has recommended the sector accept a new streamlined process for Australian student visas.
In line with a series of reforms, known as the Knight reforms, Universities Australia has encouraged 39 of Australia's universities to sign up to the new policy, under which international students enrolling in universities will be considered low risk by Australian immigration authorities and universities will bear more responsibility for their students. The reform's guidelines provide information on flexibility and discuss monitoring and assessing a university's performance, recognising that universities cannot necessarily be responsible for every aspect of a student's behaviour in Australia. As a result, University Australia's lead vice chancellor for international issues claimed, "As far as Universities Australia is concerned we have got ourselves to a good place that serves the department's objectives, implements the Knight review and allows us to work our way through this in the next year or so as we see how this system works in practice". According to Professor Gardner, the guidelines will be released early next week and provide instructions to participating universities to use high quality agents and ensure international students have appropriate English proficiency to support themselves while studying in Australia. She also believes these are things universities will do anyway. "We are used to self-accrediting, we are used to quality assurance regimes, we should be trusted to be able to put in place robust quality assurance regimes and we aren't afraid to demonstrate what they are."
