Australia Welcomes Record Number of New Citizens on Australia DayWednesday, January 27, 2010 Australia welcomed 16,500 new Australians at Citizenship ceremonies around the country on January 25. The 16,500 new citizens come from 144 countries around the world, making the 2010 Australia Day ceremonies one of the biggest and most diverse on record. Minister for Immigration & Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans attended the citizenship ceremony in Perth, Western Australia where over 2000 people became Australian Citizens. In his address to the new citizens the Senator highlighted the commitment that new citizens were making to Australia, stating "I think people should look at the pledge and understand and take time to think about it, because the pledge is really what you're doing today - you're pledging your commitment to Australia".
