Australian Universities Want Residency for Post Graduate StudentsMonday, 5 April 2010 Australia's top universities have called for a new Australian visa to be established that would guarantee post-graduate students a 3 year temporary visa that could lead to permanent residency. The group of 8 Australian Universities have prepared a submission to the Australian Government recommending that overseas students completing their PhD in Australia should be provided with a 3 year temporary work visa upon completion. According to the submission, the temporary work visa should also present a clear pathway to permanent residency. The submission argues that the changes would attract hi-calibre students from around the world, and help attract more talented and skilled workers to Australia. According to Max King from Monash University, "They are concerned about the number of graduates we have from PhDs in particular and are looking at ways to solve a problem we can see coming, that we won't have enough researchers in the future unless we do something about it now, ".
