Immigration Essential for Australia - according to expert

Friday, 2 October 2009

Immigration is the best solution for Australia's aging population, according to Bernard Salt, from KPMG.

In an editorial piece in "The Australian" newspaper, Mr Salt explained that over the next 50 years, the Australian tax base (the segment of population who contribute to tax) will be eroded, as more people retire.

Coupled with this, low birth-rates in Australia would mean that fewer young people would be entering the work-force to replace those who retire.

The increase in aged population would require an increase in funding for many services such as health care, all of which must come from taxes.

Immigration, especially skilled immigration would build on Australia's tax-base, as it increases the working population and increases tax revenue collected by the Government.

Projections of Australia's population growth suggest that Australia requires 180,000 immigrants per year, compared to the 110,000 currently allocated. Many political experts are suggesting that Australia will be increasing its immigration intake over the next decade.
