Australian Unemployment Rate Falls

Wednesday, 13 May 2009

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released April figures that show a surprise reduction in the unemployment rate for the month of April 2009.

The surprise drop amidst the Global Economic Crisis shows that the unemployment rate fell to 5.4 per cent, with the creation of 49,100 full-time jobs.

Even though sceptics are warning jobseekers to not read too much into the statistics, the shock result has pushed the share market to close to its highest level so far in 2009, and the dollar closed at its highest level in seven months.

Data from the ABS also showed the creation of more than 49,100 full-time jobs in April, indicating the first drop in the unemployment rate since August 2008, when the rate fell from 4.3 per cent to 4.1 per cent.
