Record 14,000 New Australian Citizens make history

The celebration of Australia Day on 26 January 2006 was of special significance to 14,000 people who became Australian citizens at ceremonies held around the country. According to government statistics, these 14,000 people came from more than 90 places of birth and joined more than 3.5 million people who have become citizens since Australian citizenship was introduced 55 years ago.

In order to qualify for Australian citizenship, you must have been residing in Australia as a permanent resident for at least 2 out of the last 5 fives. During this period, you must have at least 12 months residence in Australia in the last two years immediately before lodging the citizenship application.
