Controls fishing operations to catch and preserve fish, crustacea

Tasks Include:

  • controls, directs or manoeuvres ships and boats during
  • directs fishing operations by using knowledge about the
    berthing and mooring, navigational planning and emergencies species sought, fishing grounds, seasons and the capabilities
    in accordance with safety rules and regulations of vessel and crew
  • ensures compliance with regulations pertaining to safety at sea

  • operates radio, radar, sonar, echo sounder and other
  • controls and directs operations to ensure the safe and efficient navigational and fishing aids
    loading and transport of cargo and passengers
  • monitors and interprets weather patterns and obtains radio
  • controls the receipt and transmission of general and weather forecasts
    emergency information by radio, flags, morse lighting and
  • uses nets, lines, poles, pots and traps at varying depths to
    pyrotechnic communication catch fish, molluscs and crustacea
  • ensures the security, safety, efficiency and economic operation
  • supervises and assists crew in fishing operations and sorting,
    of vessels cleaning, preserving, stowing and refrigerating the catch
  • manages and controls fire hazard, abandon ship and damage
  • supervises and assists in the loading, unloading and storage of
    control procedures supplies, equipment and catch
  • manages and administers budgets and expenditure
  • records daily activities in ships' logs, keeps accounts and
  • manages and maintains inventory, records and documentation maintains records of catch
  • devises and implements strategic and operational planning
  • inspects vessels and gear to ensure proper maintenance and
    oversees repair or replacement of defective items
