The initial scheme began as the Science and Engineering Graduates scheme (SEGS) in 2004 encouraging graduates with a second class honours or above, in physical sciences, mathematics and engineering to pursue a career in the UK.

In 2006 the scheme was expanded to include masters and PhD graduates regardless of the subjects they studied as long as their degrees had been awarded after 1st May 2006.

From 1st May 2007, students who have any UK degree (bachelor, master and Ph.D.) as well as post graduate certificate or post graduate diploma from a recognised or listed body are able to take advantage of the new International Graduate Scheme after completing their studies.

They will need to show that:

1. They have been awarded the degree, postgraduate certificate or diploma after 1 May 2007 2. They intend to seek and take work during the period for which leave is granted in this capacity 3. They can maintain and accommodate themselves and any dependants without recourse to public funds
