Minister Announces Sweeping Changes to UK Immigration SystemThursday, 19 April 2007 2008 will see the introduction of a new UK immigration scheme to reward highly skilled migrants, says Liam Byrne, UK Immigration Minister.
The new immigration scheme will cover almost every type of migrant looking to come to the UK to live and work. Currently, there is almost no restriction on migrants to the UK seeking work permits or study permits. The new system will be a points-bases scheme, similar to those already in place in Australia and Canada. Among the highlights, there will be an elite tier of highly trained migrants, like scientists and or very skilled professionals, who will be able to work in the UK without a sponsoring employer. All other migrants who want to enter the UK will have to meet a minimum points score based on experience, education, training, and the need for their skills in the UK labour market. Importantly, many more foreign workers will require sponsorship from an employer in the UK before they can migrate. The new system will even affect foreign students in the UK.Byrne plans to have the first tier of the points-bases system in place for highly skilled workers by early 2008. The other tiers, for foreign workers, working holiday makers and students, will be phased in over late 2008 and early 2009. Byrne hopes that the new system will be streamlined, easy-to-enforce, transparent and fair. |
