New rules for skilled immigration set out
Thursday, 6 December 2007
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has given a speech laying out the new skilled immigration rules set to take effect from January 1, 2008. The new system is billed as "firm but fair" and is designed to balance immigration with British values.
The new points based system will but a bigger emphasis on skilled visa applicants, making it easier for them to make the UK home. However, it will also include detailed measures to ensure that only those who are qualified are successful. Also included are new biometric systems and security checks to put a stop to visa fraud and illegal entry to the UK.
Applicants can earn points for their skills, education, and potential to contribute to the UK economy.
The Home Secretary also announced her intent to raise the minimum age of sponsorship for marriage to 21, from 18. This is in an attempt to stop vulnerable people from being forced into marriages of convenience.
