UK Sees Biggest Migration Inflow Since 2001
Tuesday, 14 August 2007
Over the last year, the United Kingdom has absorbed the most newcomers since 2001. The primary driving force has been migration from the countries that recently joined the European Union. Most newcomers have been quickly absorbed by the UK economy as workers.
Migrants to the UK were issued over 713,000 new National Insurance numbers. Poles and migrants other new EU countries accounted for the vast majority of National Insurance numbers issued to new migrants.
The new European Union countries contributed over 320,000 migrants to the UK, while the rest of the EU supplied a further 100,000 newcomers.
Although some analysts expected the huge influx of newcomers to strain the UK economy and infrastructure, statistics show that new immigrants do not put undue stress on the British economy. The UK continues to enjoy an extremely low unemployment rate, with over 620,000 active job vacancies nation-wide.
