Small Towns in Canada benefiting from ImmigrationFriday, 16 October 2009 A report issued by the Conference Board of Canada reports that many Canadian small towns have found new life due to an increase in immigration to Canada. The report follows four small towns in Canada with populations from 1,539 to 18,510 which have benefited and been given new life due to well-planned immigration policies in Canada. This report titled, "Immigrant-Friendly Communities: Making Immigration Work for Employers and Other Stakeholders in Small-Town Canada," states that that schools, faith groups, local government and employers in a community all play an important role in helping new immigrants work themselves into their new environment. The report highlights the fact that small towns suffer from skills shortages and can benefit from foreign workers moving into the towns to make up for the skills shortage. Having more immigrants move into smaller, regional communities puts less pressure on major cities like Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Yellowknife, North West Territories is a great example of a small community who has seen the benefits if immigration as close to 12.7 percent of the town's population is new immigrants, most who have gone to the community work in the diamond industry.
