New Immigration Agreement Between Canada and YukonFriday, 23 May 2008 Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Diane Finley and the Minister of Education, in Yukon, Patrick Rouble, announced a new Agreement for co-operation on Immigration between Canada and Yukon. The new agreement is designed to encourage more migrants to move to Yukon to boost the local economy. Yukon's population as of December 2007 was 32,335, an increase of only 379 compared to December '06. Additionally unemployment is relatively low at 3.9%, which has left many employers with job positions that cannot be filled. The agreement sets out roles and responsibilities in immigration matters between Canada and Yukon, and includes a number of new provisions aimed at continuing Yukon's economic, and social needs through immigration. “With this renewed partnership, the Government of Canada is committed to helping ensure that the territory benefits, as other provinces and territories do, from the significant level of immigration to Canada.” said Minister Finley.
