New Funding to help people migrate to Canada's LondonWednesday, 5 March 2008 The Government of Canada has allocated some $3 million dollars to help organisations deliver settlement services in the Canadian city, London. Settlement services represent a significant part of the Canadian Government’s immigration program. London, a city in South-Western Ontario, which lies along the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor is going to benefit greatly from this allocation, as the new expanded services include language training, counselling, translation, and interpretation, all designed to help about 1,000 new immigrants. London has long been known to have a strong focus towards education, health care, tourism, manufacturing, economic leadership and prosperity. The services will aim to help ease the transition in what can be an uncomfortable and uncertain time for many immigrants. This is all part of a larger five-year, $1.4 billion-dollar initiative to increase settlement funding. The Canada-Ontario-Immigration Agreement (COIA) has already brought about an increase of $920 million dollars over the past five years. Through the COIA, CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) hopes to make a real difference in the lives of people looking to immigrate to Canada. Within the last year, Canadian immigration services have expanded to include a greater number of Service Canada centers designated, in part, to help foreign workers obtain the appropriate credentials. There are now more than 320 Service Canada centers across Canada, offering face to face services, many geared towards helping immigrants to appropriately use their skills.
