Alberta Offers Best Wages to Attract Skilled Workers to Canada

Newly released March figures revealed that the average wage for workers in Alberta Canada was $340 a month more than the Canadian average.

Average wages in Alberta have increased by 6.3% according to Statistics Canada, while the national average saw an increase of only 3.2%. Economists predict that the strong growth in employee wages would result in migrants and Canadian nationals flocking to the province to take advantage of the better wages.

Alberta has experienced low migration levels over the last year, which is most likely a factor in the economic slow-down, unsold houses and labour shortages in the area. Net migration to Alberta last year was 27,048 according to Statistics Canada, which was down significantly from 74,523 in 2006.

Canada's Federal Governments as well as individual provinces have been actively encouraging immigration with immigration incentives and federal and provincial co-operative deals.

ATB Financial, Senior Economist Todd Hirsch commented "Albertans' earnings are by far the highest in the country, and the gap between earnings in Alberta and the other provinces continues to grow".

Hirsch also noted that though the cost of living in Alberta was slightly higher than other provinces, inflation was easing with year-over-year inflation at 2.9% in March. "That means that those pay cheques are starting to go a little further for Alberta families" said Mr Hirsch.
