Immigration causes Canadian apartment vacancy rates to remain steadyFriday, 11 January 2008 Canada's steady vacancy rate has been credited to strong employment growth, solid income gains, and high immigration levels, which continued to support strong demand for both ownership and rental housing. In October the average vacancy rate for apartments across Canada's 34 urban centers was 2.6%, unchanged from the same month a year ago. The Canadian city with the highest vacancy rate is Windsor, at 12.8, while Kelowna is at the opposite end of the spectrum with a zero apartment vacancy rate. The most expensive place to rent a two-bedroom apartment is Calgary, which has an average monthly rent of $1,089, while the cheapest is Saguenay at $490.
