New Brunswick's 20-year immigration plan to increase population by 100,000

Monday, 7 January 2008

According to experts, by 2030, Canada's population growth will be almost entirely dependent on immigration, and communities that don't attract and retain newcomers will see steady declines in population.

As 97% of immigrants are concentrated in the metropolitan regions of Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, the New Brunswick government has ambitious plans to increase the province's population by 100,000 people in the next 20 years.

Although in the five years between 2001 and 2006, the Maritime province added just 499 people to its population count, the Provincial government is confidently predicting 100,000 more residents by 2026 - a rate of growth that would see 25,000 people added to the population every five years instead of just 500.

The immigration strategy of New Brunswick will rely primarily on the provincial nominee program, which holds the most promise for increasing both anglophone and francophone immigration. The nominee program fast-tracks the applications of immigrants who have guaranteed offers of full-time employment or approved business plans.

The number of immigrants who have come to New Brunswick has climbed steadily, reaching 1,600 over the past two years. They were all under the nominee program.
