Canada boosts funding to help immigrants settle in SaskatchewanThursday, 3 January 2008 The Government of Canada is increasing funding by more than $121 million over three years to provinces (besides Ontario and Quebec) in an effort to help immigrants settle and integrate into Canadian society.
This boost in funds will increase the available funding to more than $465 million for immigration support services outside Central Canada (Quebec and Ontario). In an effort to draw badly needed immigration to their labor pools, the intended goal is to help smaller provinces counter the pull of large urban cities, such as Toronto and Montreal, by providing language and skills training. While up to 11,000 newcomers settle in Manitoba every year, Saskatchewan is well short of its annual target of 5,000. To that effect the extra money amounts to an increase of about $1.5 million for Saskatchewan, to more than $5.5 million in 2008-09, up 40 per cent from last year. Canada urgently needs a large number of skilled workers. To find out if you qualify, take the free eligibility assessment, which will provide you with instant results. |
