Canada's population reaches 33 millionThursday, 3 January 2008 Based on figures released last month (Dec 2007), more than 33 million people, which includes immigrants, now live in Canada, up from 115,200 from 1 July 2007. It is the strongest growth rate in six years. Surprisingly, Statistics Canada reports that Saskatchewan has replaced Alberta as the fastest-growing province, with more than one million people for the first time since 2001. Provincially, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Alberta had population growth rates higher than the rest of the country. In fact, Saskatchewan's population had reached a record high of 1,003,300. Immigration to Canada also remained strong, with the country receiving an estimated 71,600 newcomers, an increase not seen in more than 30 years, with Manitoba, British Columbia and Ontario among the provinces posting an immigration rate higher than the national level. |
