Canada looks to India to attract skilled workersSunday, 21 October 2007 Canada's minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Diane Finley will be leaving for India at the end of October in a bid to improve Canada's immigration system there and attract more highly skilled Indians. According to the minister, Canada wants to send a message to talented Indians that the country is looking for the best and the brightest Indians to make the move to Canada. Part of Finley’s mission in India will be to work towards harmonizing the recognition of qualifications, allowing more Indian qualifications to be recognized in Canada, removing a significant barrier to highly-paid work. The minister also plans to work with different Canadian provinces to ensure that each province has a say in the kind of migrants from India that are needed for the local economy. Immigration needs vary from province to province in Canada. For example, more IT workers are needed in Ontario, while in British Columbia there is a far greater demand for construction workers and trades people. |
