The Canadian Citizenship was enacted in 1947. Prior to that date, Canadian citizens were British Subjects. As Canada’s independence evolved over the decades between Confederation in 1876 and 1947, having a unique Canadian citizenship became more important to Canada’s national identity.

Each Canada Day, July 1, ceremonies are held across Canada to welcome new Canadians, and swear their citizenship oaths.
