Under the old system, foreign students often had to wait up to six weeks to secure a work permit before they could begin employment. Often, this led to employers looking elsewhere for candidates available to start work immediately.

The new program is designed to streamline the immigration process for foreign graduate students. Nova Scotia’s Office of Immigration will be able to nominate graduate students for permanent residence status, fast-tracking their application to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC).

To qualify, applicants must be between 21 and 55 years old, have recently graduated from a Nova Scotia post-secondary institution, have world for three months with a Nova Scotia employer who can offer a permanent full-time position, and the applicant must want to make Nova Scotia their permanent home.
