Ceremony at Rideau Hall celebrates 60 years of Canadian CitizenshipSunday, 1 July 2007 On July 1, Diane Finley, Canada’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, attended a special ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa to celebrate 60 years of Canadian citizenship. The Canadian Citizenship was enacted in 1947. Prior to that date, Canadian citizens were British Subjects. As Canada’s independence evolved over the decades between Confederation in 1876 and 1947, having a unique Canadian citizenship became more important to Canada’s national identity. Each Canada Day, July 1, ceremonies are held across Canada to welcome new Canadians, and swear their citizenship oaths. |
